Cherishing The Truth
  July 10, 2005 | 1 John 4:20-21

What would the world be like without liars? If you could live in a world where everybody told the truth, what would that be like? People would not be artificial. They would say what is on their mind. Well, now that I think about that it might not be a good idea after all.

That is not to say that I like a liar, because honesty is a value that I cherish the most. But if everybody was truthful you might hear things about yourself from others than you wish you hadn't.

Proverbs 6:12-15 Let me describe for you a worthless and a wicked man; first, he is a constant liar ; he signals his true intentions to his friends with eyes and feet and fingers. 14 He is always thinking up new schemes to swindle people. He stirs up trouble everywhere. 15 But he will be destroyed suddenly, broken beyond hope of healing. TLB

In other words, everybody would give you a piece of their mind. In some ways that might be good, but it might get old real fast. You might hear opinions that go beyond what a normal person should hear. And that may not be a good thing.

But then people would also not be talking behind your back, because you would be privy to what people are saying about you. This actually might be a good thing because it would allow you to improve those things about yourself that irritate others.

1 John 4:20-21 If anyone says "I love God," but keeps on hating his brother, he is a liar ; for if he doesn't love his brother who is right there in front of him, how can he love God whom he has never seen? 21 And God himself has said that one must love not only God but his brother too. TLB

That leads me to the topic of self-improvement. If we are not improving on our ways of doing things we become bored or like stale bread. We need to understand what is best for us and what direction we need to go in life.

It is this direction that God can give us every day. If we pray for guidance and for help for others, God will give us clues to what we can do to improve ourselves. He will guide us on the righteous path if we ask Him for His help. And until we do we are like a seal in a circus without a ball or dog without a master to take him for a walk.

It reminds me of this computer I am trying to re-build. I decided to make another computer of mine liquid-cooled instead of using heat pipe cooling with two fans. But when I tried to use the computer the hard drive would not function. I got a IDE Controller card, but that did not work. I replaced the motherboard, that did not work either. So I bought another hard drive and the normal cable connections do not work, so I will have to "play" around with it a while until it finally decides to work.

I just made the computer seem like a person. As if it is the one that decides to work. Sometimes computers remind me of people. You have to press the buttons a certain way or it will not work properly. Sometimes you can be doing the same thing again and again, and then all of a sudden the computer refuses to do that task again. So you then have to work on it some more until you give the proper nudge it needs to keep working.

A computer is electronic and really does not have a mind of its own, but yet, isn't it funny how it really seems like it does have a mind that it only knows how to solve the problems of?

So what do you do then? Well you keep trying different ways and work with it differently until it decides to work. Sometimes it is stubborn like a two year old little boy or a 14 year teenage girl in a very rebellious stage. Fortunately computers are a lot easier to fix, or so I have been told.

So self-improvement is important. It is hard sometimes because it often entails making changes in our daily routine. Self-improvement despite the hard work, can be very fruitful especially if it is associated with growing closer to God. He can make the improvement of yourself more guided. He can bless you in many ways.

Life can be more interesting if we are ambitious and work hard. If we learn to take a step further in our relationship with God every day, we will be blessed in many ways.

So when you are feeling down and have heard too many lies lately, feel good in the knowledge that God will always tell you the truth.

Prayer: Dear Lord, Help me to not let the liars of this world get me down. Help me to favor the truth always and value honesty at all times. Guide me in this coming week to seek your help and guidance often. Help me to be the kind of person you want me to be. And I thank you for all your many blessings. Amen.

Benediction: Now, Lord, Bless us in our daily lives. Help us to smell the roses whenever possible, to shine our light on those less fortunate than us, and lead us in the path we should go. For you are the light that keeps our path well lit. Help us to follow it, until we meet you, in a land where milk and honey abound, a place where our most wonderful dreams are fulfilled. Amen.

Hi, my name is Bryan, a messenger of hope who would love to hear from you. God Bless.
